A Dutch designer has created vibrantly colored floor tiles using the excreta of snails fed colored paper, demonstrating how simple interventions in biological systems can leverage nature to create materials with unique and valuable properties. In a similar example, scientists in India have produced colored silk by feeding dyes to silkworms—eliminating the water, chemical and energy costs associated with silk dyeing processes. Using nature as a partner in design can yield innovative materials and create new opportunities for saving resources.
