There are more than 2,000 iconic fireboxes on the streets of Boston. The fireboxes were once an important part of the city’s public safety infrastructure, but modern communications have made them obsolete. Now the City of Boston is asking for ideas to use the boxes for "street‐side access to Boston’s digital presence" in a way that brings value to residents, business owners, and visitors.
Crowdsourcing has become a common tool for municipalities and other organizations looking to solve a problem. Some, like Open Cities Crowdsourcing Challenge in Europe or Give a Minute, appear to be fairly open ended, while others, like Boston’s firebox challenge or projects pursued under LLGA’s Cities Pilot the Future initiative, are more specific. Have you seen a successful application of crowdsourcing for improving resource performance?
