The microMAX is a concept car created by the Swiss firm Rinspeed. Its design features enhanced resource performance among several of its key components--all design and concept elements that are not typically thought of as “going together,” but which end up elegantly complementing each other thanks to Rinspeed’s thoughtful attention to design. Their prototype is a small electric car (which addresses fuel efficiency) that is designed to optimize ride-sharing (which speaks to easing traffic congestion and reducing the need for people to acquire cars) for multiple passengers (and their luggage, groceries, equipment, etc.) at once. Passengers practically stand in their seats, which not only frees up room inside the vehicle, but also allows for quick exit and entry. Because microMAX is intended for short jaunts (errands, drop-offs, pick-ups, etc.) in which time is of the essence, the standing seats are efficient and won’t become uncomfortable. Passengers use smartphones to quickly locate rides. The result is a car that operates a little bit like mass transit.
Oftentimes innovative thinking is something undertaken to address a single looming challenge or obstacle. In this case, it’s not clear where Rinspeed started when developing the microMAX concept, but they ended up innovating in a way that enhanced resource performance in several areas. Is it becoming “not enough” for companies to solve one problem without considering how other moving parts come into play?
